What’s on the Table? – Paper Moon

Due to a request from a reader to provide a review / overview and a previously very pleasant experience at La Spiga plus an overwhelming number of “Excellent” ratings on Trip Advisor, we finally decided to give Paper Moon a try.

According to their website:

This restaurant is known as one of the best Italian restaurants in Doha. This legendary Italian restaurant brand delivers fashionable, relaxed ambience and luscious, authentic Italian fare by using the freshest seasonal ingredients.

It was also the winner of Time Out Doha’s “Best Newcomer” Award last year. With this knowledge and such words like “legendary” on the website, we’re not going to lie, we really had sky high expectations from this restaurant.

The restaurant did live up to its claim of having a relaxed ambiance and it reminded us tremendously of La Spiga because of the similar furniture and decorations. We loved the outdoor seating due to the fact that it was spacious plus they installed a projector where they play movies (it was movie night when we visited and Salt was the featured film).

We dropped by for dinner and after a few minutes of being seated they provided us with the menu which we meticulously browsed. We placed our orders and complimentary bread was served for us to dig into while waiting for our food.

We tried the calamari (appetizer), tagliolini with shrimp (pasta), pepperoni pizza, chocolate lava cake (dessert) and for drinks I (Karen) had the StraBasil (strawberry with basil) and Allyson had the fresh watermelon juice.

To be truthful, after tasting each dish, we were immensely disappointed because everything we ordered was bland except for the lava cake which was decent and the drinks which were delicious. Both of us felt bad that we didn’t enjoy Paper Moon as much as we enjoyed La Spiga. For the price we paid (approximately QAR 310+ for 2) we feel like we were duped. We’re not sure if our palate is not accustomed to Italian cuisine or if the food was really just that, lacking in flavor. We still manged to finish it all just because we didn’t want our money to go to waste.

On a happier note though, the staff were outstanding and attentive. From the moment we entered the restaurant until the time we left, our dining experience was better because of them. There was no lack of friendly smiles and warm reception. The quick service was commendable as well.

Overall, we feel bad about this but we have to give this restaurant a 3 Stars (3 / 5) only. Sad to say we might not drop by this place anytime soon. We sincerely hope they improve on the flavor of the food because we want to give Paper Moon another try someday.
