Quite the opposite of Istanbul where everything is fast paced, Ankara, the capital city of Turkey is much more laid back and peaceful. This was the second stop of our tour where we headed to the most popular sight of Ankara – Anitkabir (Ataturk’s Mausoleum). Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was the leader of the Turkish War of Independence and the founder and first President of the Republic of Turkey. According to our tour guide, he always wanted to be buried near the Turkish flag but due to his contributions and importance to Turkey’s history, the Turks wanted to honor him properly hence the Mausoleum. We also made a stop at the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations which was a result of Ataturk’s desire to establish a Hittite museum. A quick detour to Lake Tuz or “Salt Lake” was also planned by our tour guide.
