15th March 2016 was the date, Al Sufra Doha at Marsa Malaz Kempinski was the place, foodies were the guests of honor, and Chef Julian was the star of the night. All of these for a Zomato Meet-Up to savor an array of Levantine inspired dishes!
We were both invited for the meet-up but due to the changing weather, Allyson caught a bug around this time therefore she was too ill to come with. On the day itself, I arrived embarrassingly late for the dinner which made me miss the first half of the night but just in time for hot & cold mezze (thankfully I didn’t miss that!).
Cold mezze was set on our long table for all foodies to share and hot mezze was placed on each foodies’ plate to taste. Mezze was then followed by a brief display of Chef Julian demonstrating to us how two of our main courses, Chicken Maqloubeh & Seafood Clay Pot (selection of fresh lobster, shrimp, hammour and calamari served with saffron rice), are properly served. Sadly, I wasn’t able to capture this on video 🙁 .
Of course the night could not end there, shortly after stuffing our faces, we all made sure that we still had some room left for Kunafa Nabulsia & an assortment of Homemade Arabic Sweets for dessert.
To be honest I am not a huge fan of Arabic food despite being in Qatar for so long but I must say that I did certainly delight in the dishes that were prepared for us. Al Sufra Doha seamlessly blends various traditional recipes and flavors from Lebanon, Cyprus, Syria, Jordan and Palestine to create an unforgettable dining experience. My personal favorites were the Seafood Tajine (hot mezze) & Seafood Clay Pot. Unfortunately, I am not an expert in this type of cuisine hence I cannot say anything more than that but only that I do not regret attending this meet-up at such an amazing setting.
Not only was the place superb but the company as well. You know you are among good company when the men start to feel comfortable around the ladies and they talk about their beards plus how they groom it and the barbershops they visit, hahahaha! I was left intrigued which made me want to check out a barbershop to get one of those interesting “slap on the back” massages as humorously demonstrated by my fellow foodie, Mohsin, that night (that is if I can handle it, ‘LOL’).
