Biella’s Sweeter the Second Time Around

What type of consumer are you?

We are the typical consumers wherein an establishment has only one shot to impress us which is normally during our initial visit. We gauge on that visit alone as to whether or not we return and/or recommend the restaurant / shop / hotel to our family, friends and you, of course, our loyal reader.

A restaurant we didn’t particularly enjoy the first time we visited it years back is Biella (managed by Al Siddiqi Hospitality). We received an invite to attend the soft opening of their 4th branch situated at Medina Centrale in The Pearl Qatar which we were skeptical to accept in all honesty due to our previous experience with them; not because of the service or ambiance or staff but since we found the food they served a bit dull.

Nevertheless, we went for it to see if they have improved or if the food would be the same and unpredictably, we found ourselves appreciating each dish we ordered though truthfully, some were still a bit of a hit & miss.

For starters we had Gamberoni All’aglio (sautéed tiger prawns with garlic, chili, olive oil and toasted focaccia) plus Capesante (pan seared scallops with tomato and roasted pepper puree). We ordered Zuppetta di Pesce (sautéed gulf prawns with mussels and calamari, fresh tomatoes, chili, garlic & parsley), Filetto di Cernia (olive and herb crusted hammour fillet with rosemary, potatoes and tomatoes) and lastly some pasta (Linguine Al Cartoccio) for our mains. Of course we couldn’t skip out on dessert so we had Cannoli Siciliani (traditional sweet ricotta filled Sicilian cannoli with strawberry puree) & Semifreddo alla Nocciola con Salsa di Cioccolato (hazelnut semifreddo with chocolate sauce) to finish the night.

We were impressed when we bit into our starters and when the time came for our pasta to be served, well we were pleasingly shocked with the presentation. The taste of the pasta was a bit bland for me (Karen) but nothing a dash of salt + pepper couldn’t fix yet Allyson seemed to like it plus she liked her order of Zuppetta di Pesce. I can’t say the same for the hammour fillet I ordered though. Not because there is any specific reason but I just found myself getting tired of eating it because the fish was accompanied with potatoes mixed in a generous drizzle of tomato sauce that packed that punch of flavor which was a little overbearing. The 2 desserts were awesome but the definite standout and our personal favorite was the Cannoli Siciliani, definitely something we would recommend to anyone.

Service and staff were impeccable which we were not surprised about since Biella always ensures to take care of its guests (as per our prior experience).

We do wish the new branch much success and we know this won’t be difficult for them to achieve due to the number of patrons present at the time of our visit even though Biella is still at the soft opening phase. We also want to extend our biggest thank you to Al Siddiqi Hospitality for the generous gift they gave us, totally unexpected and not really required at all but much appreciated.
